To pray that God’s will “be done, on earth as in heaven” is to find pleasing “whatever the will of God dispenses…either in oneself or in others.” To this request is given a certain kind of knowledge by which one comes to “know that the evil that he suffers comes from his own fault, but that the good that he possesses proceeds from divine mercy.” In this way, continues Hugh, the soul “learns, either in the evil which he sustains or in the good that he does not possess, not to become angry,” but rather in “all things to exhibit patience.” Such knowledge produces compunction, that is, sorrow for sin, which is rewarded ultimately with comfort.
