Here his analysis is surprisingly brief: after sadness comes avarice or greed, which, “once interior joy has been lost,” compels the soul “to seek consolation in external things.” Greed then propels the soul outside of itself…Hugh depicts a progressive psychological disintegration, whose primary manifestation is a lost interior capacity for feeling with respect to God, neighbor, and self and thus a corresponding perverse affective extroversion toward riches.
